Vigeland, Norway

Vigeland is an old farm in Valle parish, Lindesnes municipality in Vest-Agder county, Norway. The farm is first mentioned in 1390 (Vikinggaland – "Viking land"), but it is probably much older.

Name

The first element is the genitive case of the Norse personal name Víkingi - and the meaning is 'the land/estate owned by (the man) Víkingi'. (The first element could also be the genitive plural case of the Norse word víkingr 'Viking' - but the meaning of such a name would be a bit obscure: 'the land/farm of the Vikings'?)

Famous people from Vigeland

The family of the artist Gustav Vigeland and his brother Emanuel both originally came from this farm.
